How to create a UPI payment QR code
Enter your UPI ID
Type your VPA exactly as it appears in your UPI app, for example yourname@okhdfcbank. A single wrong character produces a code that either fails or, worse, addresses a stranger, so copy it from the app rather than typing it from memory.
Add the payee name
Enter the name payers should see when the code opens their app — your own name for personal transfers, or your shop or trading name for a counter code. This is the value people check before they confirm, so it is worth making it recognisable.
Set an amount, or leave it blank
Leave the amount empty for an open code the payer fills in themselves, which suits a counter or tip jar where the total changes. Enter a figure to fix the code to that exact sum, which suits a single-priced item or a specific invoice.
Test it, then download and display
Scan the code with your own phone and send a small test amount to confirm the money reaches the right account before you print anything. Download the SVG for print or the PNG for screens and digital invoices.
What a UPI QR code encodes
The code holds a upi://pay deep link — the standard format every UPI app in India understands. It carries your payee address in the pa parameter, your display name in pn, the currency as cu=INR, and, if you set one, the amount in am. Nothing else is stored.
Values are percent-encoded before they go into the link, so characters that would otherwise break a URL — the @ in your VPA, spaces in a business name — survive the round trip intact. That is why a name like "Sharma General Store" opens correctly rather than truncating at the first space.
The payload is entirely self-contained. No server sits between the scan and the payment prompt, this tool records nothing about scans or amounts, and the code keeps working if this page ever moves.
Fixed amount or open amount
Leaving the amount blank produces a code that works for any value. The payer scans, sees your name, types the sum and pays. This is the right choice for a shop counter, a tip jar or a donation box, where one printed code has to serve every transaction.
Setting an amount locks the code to that exact figure in the payer's app. It suits a fixed-price item, a class fee or a specific invoice, and it removes the most common friction point at the till — the customer entering the wrong number and someone having to notice.
The trade-off is maintenance. A fixed-amount code becomes wrong the moment your price changes, so treat it as disposable print rather than permanent signage, and keep an open code alongside it for anything that varies.
What happens when someone scans
Scanning opens whichever UPI app the payer already uses — Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM or a bank app with UPI built in — with your VPA, name and any amount already filled. The payer still authenticates with their own UPI PIN, so a printed code cannot move money on its own.
UPI is India's real-time payment system, run by NPCI, and settlement happens between the payer's bank and yours within seconds. The confirmation the payer sees in their app is the record of the transfer.
Be clear about what this generator is and is not. It produces a standard personal UPI deep-link code, not a merchant-acquired code issued by a payment service provider. It does not perform reconciliation, does not come with a gateway or settlement reporting, and does not tag transactions to a merchant ID — so if you are trading at any scale, confirm with your bank or PSP whether your use requires a proper merchant account.
Where to use it
Small shops and street vendors
One laminated code at the counter replaces cash handling and change, and an open code lets each customer key in whatever their basket comes to.
Market stalls and pop-ups
A printed code on a stand works without a card terminal, mobile signal permitting, and costs nothing to produce for a weekend of trading.
Freelancers and invoices
Embedding a fixed-amount code in a PDF invoice removes the step where a client retypes your UPI ID, which is where most transfer errors happen.
Donations and delivery on arrival
Temples, causes and delivery riders can display an open code so the payer decides the sum, with no terminal to carry or maintain.
Best practices
- Copy the VPA directly from your UPI app rather than typing it, since one wrong character can route money elsewhere.
- Send a small test payment to yourself before printing the code in quantity or putting it on a counter.
- Show a payee name payers will recognise, so they can confirm they are paying the right party before authenticating.
- Use an open code for anything where the total varies, and reserve fixed-amount codes for single-priced items and invoices.
- Print at least 3 x 3 cm for counter use, keep a clear quiet-zone margin around the code, and print dark on a light background.
- Laminate or weatherproof codes used on outdoor stalls, as a creased or faded print is the usual reason a scan fails.
